Sewage vs. Fecal Contamination: How to Build the Right Cleanup Scope Identify the material and source before selecting a cleanup method. An isolated fecal deposit on a sealed surface, a toilet overflow containing waste, a building sewer backup, and an unknown fluid mixed with visible blood do not create the same exposure, migration, worker-protection, plumbing, or waste questions. Stop the source, restrict access, map liquid movement, classify affected materials, clean before disinfecting, follow the product label, and document the endpoint. OSHA bloodborne-pathogen duties apply to occupational exposure to blood or OPIM, not automatically to every feces-only event.
